Monday's Muse - the Meme for Creative Moms

‘Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences than other people.’

Steve Jobs

I thought I'd post a quote today. It struck me as interesting as I believe strongly in the first part and disagree with the last part. I've often looked at my need to create as more of a need to problem solve. For me, writing or painting is equivalent to completing a complex mathematical problem -only my brain isn't wired for math (nearly failed actually!).

Being creative is a challenge and that's what attracts me. The learning and personal growth I experience keeps me coming back. I think part of it is that I get bored easily, so I start to find ways to entertain myself. I challenge myself to stay engaged with something - anything and when I'm being creative, I get to define what that anything is.

Why do I disagree with the last part? I don't think creativity has anything to do with experience. As a kid, I often felt compelled to draw or paint or organize things (another problem solving equivalent), and I had little or no experiences at that point in time. Yes, the wider your knowledge base, the more things you will recognize and connect but it doesn't mean the process functions differently based on life experience.

So what do you think? Do you agree? Disagree? Have a totally different view altogether? Share your thoughts in comments or share your creative themed post in the Mr. Linky below.

Hope you all had a fantastic Holiday Season!

Hello! As you may have noticed (or not) I took a bit of a bloggy break over the holidays. Not so much because of the holidays but more because my darling little H is still having separation anxiety issues - especially at bedtime, and this has left me with little time for, well, anything really.

I was up with her at 1:30 last night for an hour. Yawn.

I really hope she gets over this soon. It's SO draining! And I have lots of projects in mind that I'm dying to jump on...like knitting. I've decided I want to learn to knit well. You know, like with a pattern. I also have one project in progress that I really want to finish. I've started a rag quilt and I guesstimate that I'm about halfway finished. That quilt calls to me on a daily basis and I just haven't had the focus to pick it up.

Anyway, I just thought I'd pop in and see how you all are doing. Things will pick up soon here with new giveaways and new featured moms and the Monday's Muse meme of course. What have you all been up to?

Monday's Muse - the Meme for Creative Moms

Read about the Meme.

This week I'm inspired by possibilities.

The possibility that little H's sleep issues will be overcome.
The possibility that little H's sleep issues will be overcome with minimal tears.
The possibility that little H's sleep issues will be overcome with minimal tears from my eyes.
The possibility that little H's sleep issues will be overcome in a short period of time.
The possibility that my nights sleeping on the hardwood floor outside her bedroom door are almost over.
The possibility that I can reclaim my evenings for myself.
The possibility that I can use those evening times towards creative things.
The possibility that I will indulge those creative thoughts and in doing so, will become a better mother, a better wife and a better version of myself.

An Open Plea to the Xbox people at Microsoft

Dear Microsoft Customer Service,

For the LOVE OF GOD please do whatever you are supposed to do, and said you'd do to fix my hubby's Xbox. You see, it's having this "red ring of death" problem and has gone to Xbox heaven. I don't really care about it's death, I was not attached to it. But what I do care about is listening to hubby's constant complaining that Gears of War 2
will be out soon and he will be the only hubby on the block who won't be able to play it.

He's called you four times. First we were told a magic box was coming. We were to put the broken Xbox inside and send it to you....in two weeks a fixed Xbox would magically appear at our doorstep - ready for all the Gears of War-ing that any sane person could handle.

But when the box didn't come, he called again. He was told there would be some kind of email coming with some kind of code that would also allow us to send the dead machine to you. The email didn't come either.

Then another email was supposed to come. It didn't.

Yet another email was promised, and to a different email address because obviously we were the ones to blame for not receiving the first (there is nothing wrong with our email, and yes, we checked our spam trap).

I know we are in Canada and and all but last I checked we speak the same language and items cross the border without issue. There is really no excuse for this terrible service. If you don't come through here, I'll be sending you the bill for our divorce because I cannot take one more minute of the "I should have my Xbox back by now, Gears of War is almost out, it's my most favoritest game Evar! and if I don't get my system fixed you know I'll have to buy another one."

Yeah, there isn't going to be another one...it's not in the budget. Seriously people, you gotta do something here. I'm a mom to a 17 month old - not a 30 year old...and by the way, moms to other 30 year olds...if you need something for your hubby for Christmas, Gears of War 2
is totally what the cool kids are getting from Santa this year. That is, if they can wait until the Holidays.

Some very fun posts are in the works

I wanted to just do up a quick post to let you know that I'm working on some fun things for the near future. You see, when I started this blog I had a vague plan of what I wanted to write about. I feel that I've slowly lost a little focus here and there and life got busy and new plans started up and over time, I've moved away from my original goals for Maternal Spark. Now I want to get back on track and I have a new plan of action. I'll be focusing a little more on the core ideas of Creativity and Motherhood by writing a few article style posts.

While I still love hosting giveaways, they will now be posted on weekends only. (If you have a giveaway hosted with me, watch for an email with your new dates outlined. Most will only be moved a few days here and there)

I'll still be showcasing the Featured Moms as scheduled :)

I hope you'll all come along as we explore the intricacies of being a Creative Mother.

Monday's Muse - the Meme for Creative Moms

Read about the Meme.

I like to believe that I'm not a very materialistic person. I don't want for much. In fact, for my birthday (in August) I got some cash and it's still in my wallet because there isn't anything calling to me right now.

On the other hand, 'things' can be very inspiring. You've read about my antique typewriter and there is something wonderful about a beautiful blank notebook full of pages waiting to be filled. Realizing the beauty in objects has great value towards creative endeavors. Today, I challenge you to look at some everyday things and see their special beauty. Look at the design of your pen. The way light bounces off the kitchen window. Find something that you don't normally pay attention to and see how it makes you feel when it is in your hands. What can it inspire?

Monday's Muse - the Meme for Creative Moms

Read about the Meme.

Lately, things have been so hectic. We had company last week which was great fun (and they even cooked for me!)but hectic nonetheless. Plus we had one or two late nights as we got carried away with Rockband 2. Yes, I'm nerdly like that. So this weeks inspiration for me is the idea of serenity. How nice would it be to sit beside a calm ocean with nothing but a gentle breeze and the aroma of salty air to awaken my senses? To have a clean mind and the silence with which to hear it. That would be a delightful inspiration. How about you? What's your inspiration for the week. Join in the meme and post a Monday Muse on your blog. If you do, use the Linky below to share.

A writing update - Chicken Soup for the Power Mom's Soul

As you know, I submitted a story to the Chicken Soup anthology group for their Power Mom issue. Yesterday, I received an email asking me to sign and fax a Permissions Release Agreement (for copyright stuff). They also asked if I would like to approve any edits made. This means I'm outta the slush pile and moving forward! Yay!

It doesn't guarantee that they've accepted me for publication for sure, but it does mean I'm in the running so I am pretty damn pleased about that.

Everyone think happy publishing thoughts for me - I could use a good credit for my writing resume and this would fit the bill!

Creativity Killers - how to avoid the 5 biggest blocks

As hard as we try to make the best use of our free time towards our creativity. There are always those days when the heart just isn't behind the work and we struggle to be productive. Be on the lookout for these Creativity Killers so you can put them to bed and get motivated!

1) Television

This one is a no-brainer. I'm sure you all know that it's hard to form an original thought while immersed in a rousing rendition of your favorite show. Now that the new TV season is upon us I know that shows like Fringe are going to suck up a bit of my free time and I'm ok with that. But the problem lies in that many of us have the idiot box (and they call it that for a reason) on all day in the background - even when we aren't really watching it. If it's a re-run, turn it off. If you aren't really watching it, turn it off. If you have something else to do, don't try and do it with the TV nattering at you in the background. Turn it off and turn your focus on.

2) Lack of organization

Clutter is a killer of free time and free thinking. It's so oppressive. Our time for ourselves is so precious we can't have minutes flittering away into nothingness because we can't find our scissors or that special pen or what ever else you might need to complete your project. If we're organized then we are able to get down to business at a moments notice.

3) Chaos

Life with kids is a whirlwin of fun, frustration and emotion. As much as we love this about our children, we also need to teach them that there are times for play and there are times for quiet. You'll be teaching them a life skill when you show them that it is ok to sit and read a book by themselves. They will learn to focus. They will learn to turn inwards. Even if it is only for 30 seconds at a time, teach your children about relaxation and you'll be doing both of you a favor. As they get older, you'll be able to work on your creative endeavors while your little one colors, reads or does a puzzle beside you.

4) Perfectionism

This goes back to the quote I posted for Monday's Muse. Just because we don't feel we have the time to do a perfect job, or a complete job doesn't mean we shouldn't begin. Don't talk yourself out of it by thinking a little bit isn't worth doing.

5) Fatigue

I'm always foggy when I feel tired. I know that sometimes it can't be avoided - like the other night when little H woke up at midnight with teething pain and refused to go back to bed until we'd exhausted a whole rigmarole of tricks. But on days that you stay up surfing the net (I'm bad for this one) or watching those TV shows we talked about while half awake, you could have grabbed a precious hour of extra sleep making you bright and ready to roll the next morning.

What is your biggest block? What do you do to overcome them? Share in comments :)

My Day at Work with Little H

Thanks so much for the comments on my post about taking Little H to work with me. I thought I'd pop in and post a quickie update :)

She woke up at 5am. I thought for sure I was screwed. But she was a complete angel ALL DAY. I couldn't believe it. It was like she was a different child. She sat in her stroller for the longest amount of time she'd ever been in her stroller. She amused herself by snacking on bananna and goldfish crackers while watching a myriad of Baby Einstein videos (I don't normally use TV to babysit my kid so please don't blast me over it....this was a special situation).

She even napped in her stroller.

My teleconference went fine. I got my project completed. I changed two poopie diapers on my desk as coworkers passed my office window with looks of sympathy and understanding. Everyone appreciated the above and beyond effort that went into planning a day with a 15 month old at work.

I couldn't have asked for it to go better and it was nice showing my boss that my new mommyhood status doesn't change my abilities to perform.

Now, if I can get her on the payroll somehow we'll be set!!

How far can I push it before my brain asplodes?

On Wednesdays I usually work from home via email. I decided to do this because:

a) I don't like being away from little H 40 hours a week
b) It saves us in childcare costs
c) Hubby only gets every second weekend off. So not every week, but every second week, he is off on Wednesdays - so every second Wednesday we get a bit of family time (did 'ja get that?).
d) I enjoy my pjs and
e) Time saved commuting is time I can, maybe if I'm lucky and all the planets align and I don't cook dinner, get some creative stuff done.

Right now at work we are dealing with three HUGE projects that involve a lot of money. I need to be there to help out and coordinate actions surrounding these projects. So guess what. Wednesday came around and I couldn't afford to not be in the office - there is just too much going on. What I'm doing about it? I'm taking little H to work with me.

Please pray for me that:

Little H doesn't cover me from head to toe in goo, snot, tears, banana or something else equally embarrassing.

That she doesn't have a massive poop blowout for all the world to smell

That she sits nicely in her stroller and watches her baby Einstein video during my meeting (yes, I will be in a teleconference meeting!)

That she amuses herself safely and allows me to actually get some stuff done.

My head hurts just thinking about it!

What time of day are you Creative Moms in the mood?

I know personally, that my brain works its best creative magic later in the day - just before midnight. I've always known this as sometimes I find it hard to fall asleep because my mind is scheming and planning away. Since going back to work means getting up early, I've found myself tired and in need of going to bed much earlier. Around 10 or 11 at the latest. My creative mind hasn't adjusted so well to this time switch.

I'm going to seriously think about this predicament and see what I can do about it. I might have to try writing on my lunch break and see how that goes...I feel the problem is, I don't take a regular lunch break and I often eat at my desk while working. This might need to change. Maybe my brain will work just fine creatively over lunch. I need to find out.

How about you? What time of day do you find it convienient to get creative? And is this your optimal productive time? Maybe you're a freak morning person and you get down to business before the rest of the house wakes up. Let me know what works for your creative mom self -I just might have to try it too.

Share your inspirations...Interested?

I thought I'd share these wee paintings which were done quite some time ago. They are 5x7 which I'd found the perfect size to complete in one sitting. I should really take some time to do a few more as I miss the fluid pace of brush over paper.

These days, I find it takes a bit too much time setting up my supplies, and then the clean up is another story. I guess that's why I haven't done any for a while.

My minis are pinned to a bulletin board in my office and I intend to add a few more images so that it becomes my Inspiration Board. Maybe I'll snap a pic of the board every time I add something new. How about we do it together and maybe add something new once a week? Are you up for it? I think it would be fun to see each other's boards grow and it will give us a bit of insight into who we are.

It could be like one of those meme things I keep seeing around. You know the ones - like wordless wednesday? Leave me a comment if you are interested and if there is enough response I'll make it all official like with a button and linky thing and all :)

Mercantile Spark, Daycare and Writing - Oh My!

Thought I'd do a little update type post today.

Mercantile Spark

The new blog is coming along very nicely! The design is looking great - I bit the bullet and paid a designer for this one as I am not familiar with Word Press as of yet and don't really have loads of time to figure it all out on my own. It's a nice, calm color pallet and the layout will work really well with the format I have in mind. So far, so good.

Daycare for Little H

As you know we found ourselves suddenly without a daycare provider last month. We've been scooting by on the skin of our teeth until now, having flown out one Grandparent and used a few holiday days. Good news is we found a new sitter! She has a little boy who is the perfect age to be a great playmate for Little H. I'm feeling really good about the new situation. She starts her first full day on Thursday so wish us luck.

Writing

I finished my piece for Chicken Soup for the Power Moms Soul. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I wish I had loads more time to devote to tweaking and polishing and pouring over every detail. On the other hand, I don't have that time. The result is something that was produced in a very simple manner. I sat down and wrote the first half. Then, I wrote the second half in my next sitting. A few edits later and it is what it is. I hope they like it enough to put me on the shortlist but who knows. At this point in my life and with all that has been going on I'm proud that I even managed to write it. Even if it never gets published it will still remind me of this time where I'm clinging to my passions with all I have left. I hope you are doing the same.

On being funny

I'm working on a writing project right now and I want it to have a touch of funny. It's been my experience that whenever I try to implement a specific strategy to elicit a certain emotional response from the reader, I feel as though I'm bleeding from my brain. It is HARD to be funny! I have so much respect for writers who can pull it off day after day.

When I write, I like it to flow easily and the end result is what it is. I can do some editing to clean it up. I can add some information to reinforce an idea. I can remove some information to increase tension but for the most part, it flows out my fingers into the computer and that's it.

What about you? If you try to design a piece of jewelry with a certain feel does it work well or do you just go with the flow?

If you are focused on a technique for a painting do you succeed?

I'm interested to see how this conundrum translates over to other mediums - share in comments.

Featured Mom - Mel of My Aphrodite & Giveaway!

Today's featured mom has stepped outside the interview format (yay!) and composed a post of her own. Mel sells her unique jewelry through her Etsy store and has embraced motherhood and creativity in her life. Enjoy her words and make sure to read the post for instructions on how to win one of her pieces!

written by Mel of My Aphrodite

I'd like to say that metal always called to me, but it didn't. I wasn't born with silver in my veins. I got into jewelry because I wanted to spend a spring semester goofing off and I was fortunate enough to attend a liberal arts college that allowed me to do just that. Like most floaty folk-chick types, during my time in college I developed an obsession with the Pre-Raphaelites. Their idealized version of what was truly beautiful was enchanting to me. Plus, I wanted everyone to know that I was a sensitive soul that cherished love and beauty. The truth is, I liked listening to "Jagged Little Pill" over and over, drinking beer, playing naked soccer at 2 in the morning and trying to make time with sensitive theatre boys who had long hair and cried easily.

Jewelry making was just another extension of that pursuit of beauty. But beauty takes time; there was rather a lot of melting in the beginning. And burns. And swearing. And saw bites. And firescale. But little by little over the years, I've got the hang of bending Sterling to my will and coming out with a nice finished product.

Like a lot of new mothers, I struggled with post-partum depression and to me, the worst aspect of it (aside from making me question whether or not I was fit to be a parent in the first place) was the loss of motivation towards any form of creative activity. I didn’t realize how important my artistic endevors were to me until I couldn’t face them anymore. I am tremendously lucky to be blessed with a hugely supportive and caring husband who urged me to take care of myself and do what I had to do in order to be happy. After starting on anti-depressants, I re-discovered my passion for silver working and have been on an unstoppable creative bender ever since. Discovering Etsy has also been the one of the best things that’s ever happened to me creatively. It not only gives me an easy way to peddle my wares, but I feel very accepted in the community and have made some lovely friends along the way.

Finding time to work with a toddler in the house isn’t always easy, but I do manage, during naps and post-bedtime. My work has changed dramatically in the last few months. Before having my daughter, I was obsessed with creating complicated pieces, but since spending time with her and the books that we read over and over, I’ve moved into less complicated but still pleasing shapes; things that she can point to gleefully and identify. My passion for jewelry work was something I never expected but I can’t now imagine being without it.

Mel has offered up this sweet little birdie, a miniature version of her best selling "Potential for Flight" pendant. It's strung on a 16 inch purple leather cord and has amethyst and citrine bead accents. To win - Go check out her shop, her work is truly inspiring! Pick your favorite item, then come back here and tell us what it is in comments. Make sure you leave your email address so we can contact you if you're the winner.

Being busy beyond belief encourages focus

I was standing in the shower this morning doing the zombie stance. Head back, water hot, eyes closing not because of steam, but because I was falling asleep standing up. And I started to wonder if I was taking on too much.

There's this blog, the new blog, the Chicken Soup essay, a new weekly contribution which I'll talk more about at another time plus working full time and raising a one year old.

Yesterday, some family dropped by with some books for Little H and it was sort of unexpected. I couldn't let them in the house. It was verging on dirty with cat fur covering the sofa and little H's cast offs still on the floor from the last meal. I suggested we take Little H and their 5 year old to the park next door instead.

As I let the conditioner work on my hair, I stared at some soap scum on the tile and I started feeling guilty about the state of my house. I started wondering how I will manage all of this, and how I've been managing it until now.

I realized that the answer is in my focus. I've been thinking fast on the topics at hand because I can't afford not to. I find myself narrowing in on my goals, choosing my activities wisely, defining what it is I want to accomplish and striving towards that. So housework isn't in my top ten must dos. We aren't wallowing in filth or anything like that, but I would like things a bit more orderly. One day we'll get there - when Little H can understand she needs to play in her room so I can scrub a toilet. Until then I'm ok with what's going on because I'm doing what's important to me. I'm working towards my goals and I'm spending lots of time with my daughter who doesn't care if all her cute onesies are in the wash and I've dressed her in a not so cute one. And I did make a very nice chicken stew for dinner last night, I was happy about that.

I got out of the shower feeling much better about myself and where I've chosen to spend my time. I felt refreshed and ready to start my day - then I brushed my teeth with hubby's toothbrush. Maybe I should put 'sleeping' a little higher up on the to do list ;p

ps - image from wikipedia - that's not my shower, mine is grosser than that!

Recognizing your influences - Part 2 of 2

In my last post I wrote about recognizing our influences. Today, I'd like to discuss using this information now that we've revealed what it is.

There are two ways we can go here. We can embrace our influences and work towards incorporating them as much as we can while still maintaining our originality, or, we can shut them out and see where our mind wanders when it finds itself in unfamiliar territory.

So what does this mean really?

1) Embracing our influences.

How do we go about incorporating everything we love and still remain truthful to ourselves? The key is in our awareness. In order to include or exclude anything we must be aware of our inclinations and that is why my previous post was important. If you haven't done a little self study exercise go and do so.

Once we know why it is we do the things we do; we are free to pick and choose which techniques, which feelings, which voice to incorporate into any given project. Not only can we choose what we want to do openly, we will recognize when we are losing ourselves amongst our influences.

2) Shutting out our influences.

In the opposite direction we can attempt to abandon what we know and forge ahead into uncharted territory. This is going to be more difficult as our influences are so ingrained into us that they may even form the basis of our creativity. However, we can take drastic measures here. If we normally write in prose, we may switch to poetry. If we normally paint in oil, we can switch to sculpture. If we are comfortable in sewing, what would happen if we picked up a paper art? Changing mediums gives us a higher chance of leaving behind our influences and seeing our basic creative nature show through. Will we create a masterpiece? It's unlikely. We will though, get in touch with ourselves and how we work when our instincts are challenged. We will have fun and we will learn. Teaching ourselves how to be creative in a new way will help us to carry over those new techniques into our medium of choice. Like remapping our brains, we will be able to see things afresh and it may be the key to breaking out of a creative rut.

I hope you take some time for self reflection. Think about your influences and what they mean to you. Be aware of why you do the things you do and it will only elevate your art. All the best to you in your endeavors.

Creative blocks - what to do?

I'm in a predicament right now where I'm trying to think of something and it just isn't flowing.
You see, I'm planning to start up another blog, in addition to Maternal Spark. It will be separate, but related, sort of.

My problem is I can't think up a name for it!

The blog will be about how small, home based and indie businesses can use blogs and social networking to gain a presence on the web and grow their businesses. Now, I don't pretend to be an expert on the subject but I've learned a great deal on blogging over the past while as Maternal Spark launched and I feel like I have some knowledge to share. I also plan to have a panel of people in the know for Q&A purposes (if you are interested in this, email me).

Here's what I'm doing to over come my problem. I hit Thesaurus.com and started searching words that I feel are related. Now I'm making a list of those words and seeing how they might fit together.

Initially I thought about calling it 'Maternal Mentor' but realized I'd like to be read by people who aren't necessarily moms too....not sure if that would matter - opinions? Then I thought using the word 'Spark' would be nice too but can't seem to fit it in.

Anyway here are a few words that I like - if you guys get any bright ideas, reply in comments. I could use some help!

Domestic
Spark
Domicile
Abode
Familial
Dwelling
Mentor
Resourceful
Endeavor

If you suggest a name and I use it, I'll transfer $25 from my paypal account to yours :)

Busy Moms know how to save time -10 ideas for what to do with it

You're smart. I know that. You've been reading time saving tips all over the place; heck there are entire sites dedicated to saving time.

You write a grocery list so you aren't wandering aimlessly around the store - time saved : 10 min.

You organize your home so you know exactly where stuff is when you need it - time saved searching for a pair of scissors: 3 min.

You cook meals in bulk and freeze for later - time saved upwards of 1/2 hour.

So, once you've saved all this time what are you doing with it? How do you make the most of those 3 or 10 minute chunks of time when it is easy to let them flitter away. Sometimes, your three year old will smear their pb&j all over the kitchen floor and then that time is used - it's unavoidable. But there are days, here and there, when everything is running smoothly and you've got 5 min to spare. How on earth can you use such a small amount of time towards your creative endeavors? Here are 10 things you can do in 10 min or less.

1) Write down three ideas for future projects - don't worry about fleshing them out. Just get them down on paper. Next time you go to get creative you won't be wondering what to do - that part will be done for you.

2) Do a Doodle. Sketching or doodling, even for those of us without a visual bone in our bodies, still loosens up the mind and allows for a connection between thought and action.

3) Read. Take 2 minutes to read your favorite crafty website or blog........ahem.

4) Set up. Go to your creative space and thread your sewing machine. Lay out your bead supplies. Cast on that first row of knit stitches. Then, when the kids are in bed you'll be all ready to dive in - and anticipating it too.

5) Shut off. Get comfy and close your eyes. Relax for once wont'cha! You never know what might come if you let your brain breathe.

6) Pack Jr. in the stroller and go for a walk around the block - longer if you have the time. Or even better, go along a river path or woodland walkway. Nature inspires many.

7) Review something you've completed in the past that you weren't quite happy with. Think about what you could do to make it better.

8) Start in - depending on what type of artist you are, 10 minutes might be long enough to actually DO something. Cut out some pattern pieces. Embroider that little butterfly motif. Ice your cupcakes.

9) Do some research. Writing a historical story? Find out what they would have cooked for a celebration in 1856. Need to know how to solder something - hit the Google. Five minutes of learning never did anyone harm.

10) Did I say 10? I meant 9, yeah 9 ideas for what to do with your saved time. My time is up. See you later!
